Art society; New York, N.Y. Harry Watrous was elected president of the National Academy of Design in 1894. The Brooklyn Art Association was founded in 1861 as an organization looking to improve the market for Brooklyn artists and to enhance the culutural life of Brooklyn. The Association was composed of both artists and lay citizens, and through its efforts laid the groundwork for what would later become the Brooklyn Museum.
